Why Fish the Birds Nest?
The Bird’s Nest fly, originally created by Cal Bird, has earned its reputation as one of the most versatile and productive caddis patterns out there. Whether you're Euro nymphing, Czech nymphing, or just working fast water, this pattern offers the perfect combination of weight, movement, and realism.
Over time, I’ve moved from traditional anchor flies toward a drop-shot Euro nymphing rig, but I still reach for Bird’s Nest variations on almost every trip, including unweighted versions.
What Makes the Beadhead Bird’s Nest So Effective?
The bead head version of this classic pattern functions perfectly as a heavy anchor fly while still imitating an emerging caddis pupae with realism and subtlety. The natural profile of a caddis pupae lends itself to getting plenty of weight built in.
Key Features:
Slim profile: A thin abdomen and thorax replicate the natural taper of a caddis pupae.
Soft hackle collar: Suggests movement and gas bubble emergence during the pupation process.
UV dubbing (optional): Adds flash and enhances visibility, especially in off-color water.
For this variation, I use green caddis UV dubbing, but you can easily substitute or remove it depending on the water you’re fishing.
Tying the bh bird’s ne'st
The key to this pattern is the brahma hen soft hackle collar. I’ve noticed a marked difference in production with and without it, so for me it’s an absolute must.
Birds Nest Materials:
Hook: Size 12-20 curved shank hooks
Thread: Brown Thread ( I prefer 16/0 for most of my nymphs and dries)
Abdomen: Any type of hare’s ear style dubbing. Here, Wapsi Natural fur in light hares ear.
Rib (Optional): gold wire
Bead Head (Optional): Gold Tungsten (can be oversized)
Thorax (Optional): UV Green Caddis dubbing
Customizing the Bird’s Nest for Local Waters
One of the best things about this fly is how easily it can be customized. As you can see below, my variation deviates quite a bit from the original.
Original Materials:
Tail: Wood duck fibers
Body: Natural possum dubbing
Thorax: Picked-out possum or looped dubbing
To tailor this fly to local conditions, you can swap pretty much everything on this fly as long as you maintain the profile and the soft hackle collar. For example, on the Nantahala River, I fish a version with brown possum dubbing and a maroon UV thread collar. It’s deadly in tannic or high-pressure conditions.
